Gapminder Screencast and Analysis.

1. A. The 2 development indications I chose for the first screencast were the improvements in technology(cell phone per 100 people ) and increases in income(GDP per capita).
For the second screencast, the 2 development indications I  chose were infant mortality(number children 1-5 years of age dying per 1,000 born) and the percentage of the labor force employed in the service sector.

B. These indicators provide insight on economic development in different ways. The first screencast provides insight because basically, the definition of development is "progress being made in technology, production and socioeconomic welfare". Cell phones are most definitely part of technology, and GDP per capita (income per person) which is also a key to development, because developed countries are obviously not poor and vice versa. The second screen cast also provides insight on development because in developed countries the infant mortality rate is typically very low, because developed countries have the advances in medicines and technology which saves lives. The other indication for my second screen cast has a completely different outlook on development. Instead of decreasing(in numbers) like infant mortality rate in a developed country, the percentage of workers employed in the service sector of the labor force increases in developed countries. This means that less people in the countries labor force is involved in jobs that require little to no education, such as agriculture and factory work. In developed countries, most people graduate from college and get a job in the service sector.

2.A. Technology is becoming increasingly popular in both LDC's and MDC's. Technology is much more successful in MDC's versus LDC's because it can be very expensive to purchase and maintain. Technology is diffused much quicker and effectively in developed countries rather than developing countries due to the higher wages and new major means of transportation that are located in more developed countries. The increase in income is popular in developed countries because the workers rights are much stricter than the laws in developing countries that just is trying to focus on production, not the safety of workers. Income diffuses when the service industry diffuses and gains more workers in this sector. The highest paying jobs are in the service sector, but these types of jobs require higher education. Infant mortality is a huge factor of development in LDC's! Most developing climates are in tropical climates, which have many fatal diseases that fortunately people living in cooler climates never have to experience. The infant mortality rate in more developed countries is obviously lower than the rate in developing countries. Because in MDC's, we have skilled doctors, scientists, high tech gadgets used by lots of health care professionals that all work together to save lives.

B. The tropical climates have many disadvantages, but so does cooler climates. But the disadvantages for each climate, are very different from the other climates disadvantage. Tropical climates have many diseases, droughts, cheap labor, low education and many natural disasters. LDC's are usually in tropical climates. But cooler climates have a short agricultural season, and different viruses from those of tropical climates. These are usually the MDC's, and these disadvantages are pretty easy to over look since we have antibiotics and other medicines, and the winter really only affects people that are employed in the agricultural sector, which in the U.S. is less than 7%. Infant mortality is decreasing in core countries due to new medicines, but it's not decreasing in the periphery, because they don't have access the the medicines that we are fortunate enough to have. And in some countries in Africa, the IMR it increasing because of the spreading of vectored diseases such as malaria. Fortunately, worker wages globally are becoming higher, and sooner or later, wages will be high enough to provide families with enough money to actually support themselves and put food on their table and make a living. Technology is increasingly becoming more and more popular, and now that wages are being raised, more people will be able to purchase basic technology and it will have an even more extreme rapid growth. People will start making enough money, not only by raising wages, but by switching jobs to more fulfilling jobs that have an even higher income! Of course service sector jobs require an intense education, that people all over the world wish that they could afford, but with the wages being raised in the primary and secondary sectors, people are now able to provide for their families and save some money for the education of their children. By just raising the wages by a little, it can have a huge output and it will help the world become a better, safer, healthier and more developed place. With happy people, you have a happy economy, which leads to a happy country, and this makes the world a better place. For everyone, and it can be just one happy home

Crossing The Line GIS Activity

1.a.) Mali is a country located in North West Africa and it is likely to spilt into two due to cultural differences, it is likely to divide right at a cultural boundary between the Muslims and the Malians.
b.)N. and S. Korea located on the Korean Peninsula in Asia. The Koreas are likely to unite and create a single Korea. Which will most definitely be an economic superpower.

2.a.)My first boundary is in Mali, Mali is in Western Africa. Mali is having some internal disputes which could lead to diversion. These major conflicts first started over two years ago on January 16th, 2012. Multiple rebellious groups that opposed the Malian government, began fighting a campaign for independence, or at least more freedom for Azawad (the Northern part of Mali). Soon enough, the rebels took control of Azawad in April 2012 and declared independence on April 6th of 2012. Just one day after the rebels said they achieved all their goals and they were going to back down. The rebels then got backed up by several Islamist small groups, and also a large Islamist group, the  Ansar Dine. Azawad rebels and the Islamist groups were having trouble “ruling” together due to the difference in the visions they had for their new intended state. By July 17th, the Malian rebels lost almost all of the Northern cities to the Islamists. Things were getting so bad that the Malian government had to ask foreign militaries to come and help gain control over the North again. The French responded, and had troops in Mali in January of 2013. Later other African Union states joined the French and Militaries which soon helped re-take the islamist territory an give it back to the Malian government on February 8th, 2013. But unfortunately, that isn’t the end of this war, the rebels were still fighting for their territories back. Eventually the government issued a peace deal, which the Tuareg rebels signed on June 18th 2013, but just 8 days later they pulled out of the deal, and the Northern and Southern parts of Mali have been fighting ever since.
b.) The North and South of Korea are likely to unite, just like other countries have such as East and West Germany that united to create the unified Germany we know today. The Koreas were once unified, but with in the last century, they split up, creating what we know as North and South Korea. The president of South Korea has been recently has been talking about reunifying and is very serious about it. Reunifying will help both countries by having more access to resources, larger workforce and of course and even stronger military.

3.a.)The new boundaries formed in Mali will be cultural boundaries, these help separate people and groups that want to be separated, which will greatly minimize the devolutionary forces.
b.)The new boundaries for the joined Korea will be physical boundaries(the Korean Peninsula)

4.a.) the devolutionary forces in Mali will definitely decrease when the country becomes two independent states, because now that they are separated, what’s to fight about? In
b.)Korea on the other hand, they have had some tension between each other in the past and mushing the two states into one, will definitely increase the devolutionary forces, which could lead to them splitting again..

Cultural Geography Photo Collage

The flowers shown are called Lotus Flowers. It symbolizes beauty, purity, grace and rebirth in many religions such as hinduism and buddhism. It was also symbolic in the ancient Egyptian culture. Not only is it a Sacred flower, it is also serves for medicinal purposes. Many traditional ancient medical texts reported its use for skin conditions, lowering fevers, and also helps for supporting a weak heart. In India, honey made by bees visiting lotus flowers is said to be a medicine called 'padmamadjhu' or 'makaranda' and is used for eye disorders. This flower not only is very useful, but also very beautiful. So in places of the world that don't see it as a spiritual object, people usually use it in a bouquet or as centerpieces for weddings.

Census Data Mapper Map & Analysis - October 2013.

Link to this map on google drive

My map shows the percentage of people of 65 years and older. Not only is a map a great way to display data but is it a visually effective way to analyze what is happening in the U.S. My map shows where the highest percentage of people 65 years and older and where they are in the U.S.  I will now further analyze it for you. In the map you can see the population of the 65+ years people are very concentrated in the midwest region of the U.S. and also the northern part of the rocky mountain region. Many of the states have counties that have a higher percentage of 65+ year olds than others; they are really striking on the map.
Some counties in Nevada appear to be conspicuous with a relatively high percent, however, they are not densely populated areas.  For example, two counties with the largest 65+ population in Nevada are Nye with 23.4% of its population, and Esmeralda with 25.8% of population. Although 23.4% and 25.8% percentages are a relatively high percent, these percentages translate into only 9,882 and 193 people, respectively. An area with the highest percentage of 65+ year olds is in Sumter County, Florida, with 43.4%; that calculates to be around 43,500 people older than 65! The map easily shows where the number of 65+ is low as well. In other places such as the east coast and Rocky Mountain regions the percentages are fairly low such as in Loudoun County in Virginia where only 6.5% of people 65+ years old; in this more populated area with a population of 336,898, this is 21,898 people.
I believe the patterns that show up in this map of people 65+ years old are fairly related to retirement. Many people from the north like to retire to places that have a very nice warm weather, while people all over retire to see the northern/ midwest's 4 seasons (sounds crazy that people would suffer through freezing winters just so they could live in a place with distinct seasons. But that is what 3 elderly couples I know told me that was the reason they moved to MN from CA) and that is one reason why I think 65+ year olds are clustered in the Midwest. Florida is a dream retirement destination for many. It does not have all 4 seasons but it does have great weather all year round. Also Florida allows a service called the OSS, that provides up to $700 a month to people ages 65+ or if you are 18+ and either blind or mentally disabled to help cover the cost of assisted living and also tax deductions. I see why many choose Florida over other Southern states now.
Having so many older people in a certain area, can have both a negative and positive impact. For instance, having many older people would help out socially and culturally which is a positive. They will be a positive role model for young children to look up to and also it would help teach the younger generations about cultural things in the area. But there are also negative impacts, such as having to provide money and taxes to cover assisted living costs for the elders when the tax money could go to education, so it ends up hurting young adults who are trying to save money for college or other large expenses, but have to pay extra dollars for healthcare for the older people in the population, so therefore satisfying the elders while hurting the younger generations.
